Washington Huskies trey fest leads to 68-54 win over Colorado in Pac-12 Women’s Tournament play

The Washington Huskies had four players who scored in double figures to secure an impressive  68-54 upset win over the Colorado Buffaloes to start Pac-12 Tournament play.

Amy Van Dyke  and Tameiya tied for team honors with 18 points apiece with Quay Miller and Alexis Griggsby both scored 11 points each. The Huskies made 11-20 three-pointers for a scorching  55% percentage.

FOCUSED ON DEFENSE

 Wednesday’s night win over Colorado was the first for the Huskies who had lost to the Buffs the previous two times they played this season. The last time the two teams played was just ten days ago. Lessons learned from that game were helpful in the Huskies creating defensive looks that frustrated the Buffs.

After trailing  19-12 after the first quarter due to sloppy play that resulted in seven turnovers the Huskies settled down in the second quarter and out-scored Colorado 22-9 to take a 34-28 lead at the break. Quay Miller scored eight of the Huskies 22 second-quarter points.

COLORADO LATE GAME RUN  

Colorado came out the halftime break-breathing fire and reeled off a  quick 6-0 run to tie the game at 34-all with seven minutes left in the third quarter. The Huskies matched Colorado’s grit and determination with a 19-6 run to finish the third quarter with a 53-40 lead.  Colorado made another gallant run at the Huskies to cut the lead to just eight points at 57-49 with 5:07 left in the game. Unlike the previous two games, the Huskies kept their pose and secured the win with an 11-5 run to close out the game.
