The long-awaited answer to what happens next to the Seahawks offense has somewhat been answered. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll fired offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer on January 12th citing philosophical differences. The announcement came days after Carroll expressed the need to run the ball more effectively in the upcoming season. Two days later Schottenheimer was out.
EXPERIENCED RUNNING INTRICATE OFFENSE
On Friday the Seahawks made the hiring of Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator and Andy Dickerson as run game coordinator from the LA Rams official. Waldron spent the last three of his four years with the Rams as the teams passing the game coordinator. Dickerson spent the last nine years as the Rams assistant offensive line coach. The two coaches were college teammates at Tufts University. Friendship aside the duo will bring deception to a talent-filled Seahawks offense. Very few would turn down the opportunity to coach an offense with the likes of Russell Wilson, DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Chris Carson, and Will Dissly. The Seahawks offensive line is a solid unit that is trending upward.
PREDICTABLE OFFENSE
Carroll’s reason for hiring Waldron and Dickerson was to find a way to be more effective on offense. The Seahawks had the top-ranked offense entering Week 8 of the season and a 6-1 record. Back to back losses to the Bills and Rams showed that the Seahawks offensive scheme was vulnerable because of its predictable. The late-season nosedive and abrupt playoff exit necessitate a change in philosophy at the very least.
ART OF DECEPTION
According to sources, defensive coordinators knew if the Seahawks were going to run or pass because of the personnel groupings they had in the game and how they were lined up. The Rams were the opposite. Wide receivers Cooper Kupp, Josh Reynolds, Robert Woods, TE Tyler Higbee, and running back could line in the same exact formation four consecutive plays and four different types of plays would be called. One play could be a run, another a pass, a third could be a wide receiver reverse, and the fourth a quarterback keeper. The drag shallow route pass to Jacob Hollister was played out, as was the deep ball to Metcalf. Rarely did the Seahawks run the ball on back to back plays from the same formation.
EFFECTIVE RUN GAME
The Rams offense was ranked No.10 last season averaging 126.1 rushing yards per game despite not having a running back rush for more than 625 yards for the season. The Hawks offense was ranked no.12 with free agent Chris Carson leading the team with 681 yards. Dickerson’s experience as an offensive line coach will help him work with current offensive line coach Mike Scolari to craft some unpredictable run block schemes. The Rams have been in ranked the top 10 in the NFL for the fewest sacks allowed for four-straight years, including in 2019 when they gave up a league-low 22 sacks, and last season when they allowed 25, tied for sixth-fewest.
