Seahawks vs Rams; A quick preview using the numbers

The Seattle Seahawks will take on NFC West Divisional Rivals LA Rams for the third time this season and second time in the last three Weeks Saturday at Lumen Field (1:40 p.m.). It is only fitting that the winner of Saturday’s NFL Wildcard Playoff match will continue their quest for a Super Bowl. The Rams will roll into Saturday’s game with the NFL’s no.1 ranked defense. The Seahawks won the last game between the two rivals and believe they can make it two in a row because of a healthy offensive line.

Saturday will mark the seventh time this season that Guards Mike Lupati, Damien Lewis, tackles Brandon Shell, Duane Brown and Center Ethan Pocic will start side by side. The Seahawks are 6-0 with that combination. The Rams offensive line will get a boost in the return of lineman Andrew Whitworth who is back after team his MCL and PCL in Week 10 against the Seahawks.

With the Jamal Adams mystery solved. Adams has been given a full bill of health to play on Saturday. The next pregame mystery storyline is who will start at quarterback for the Rams. Jarred Goff was the starter in the Seahawks Week 16 20-9 win but sustained a thumb injury during the game. First-year player John Wolford started the Rams week 17, 18-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals. The win propelled the Rams into the playoffs. Goff says he is healthy and as expected Rams coach Sean McVay is tight-lipped out who will start on Saturday.

The Rams defense is led by Aaron Donald arguably one of the best players to ever play the game. No disrespect to Bobby Wagner who also falls in the same category.  The All- world defensive lineman leads the Rams with 13.5 sacks. Wagner and Donald will both show up as they have always done in their careers. Both players were named to the AP 2020  First Team squad.  The Seahawks defense has shown it can contain the Rams offense. The key to the game will be the effectiveness of the Seahawks run game. Donald has 12  sacks against Russell Wilson in 12 games. An effective run game will slow Donald and bring the Seahawks play-action game into play.

The much talked about match up between Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey and Seahawks wide receive D.K. Metcalf will go the Seahawk’s way if there is a run game. An effective run game will allow Wilson some time to throw downfield and hit Tyler Lockett on intermediate pass routes. No run game means Wilson will spend the day running for his life and that will spell disaster for the Seahawks. Metcalf has recorded 8 catches for 96 yards in two games against the Rams this season

Look for the Seahawks to win a defensive slugfest. The Seahawks defense will be able to confuse whoever the Rams put at quarterback with disguised blitzes from  Adams, Bobby Wagner, and K.J. Wright. The Rams Donald will have another monster game chasing Wilson up and down the field. The difference will be the running of Chris Carson. Carson is fully healthy, has some fresh legs, and will get in-game rest from Carlos Hyde and Rashaad Penny. Both are fully healthy. And yes Metcalf will out-duel Ramsey.
