Seahawks versus 49ers: A Quick Preview Using The Numbers

Having already clinched the NFC West division title the Seahawks( 11-4) ) will look to keep their slim hopes for a first-round bye Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers( 6-9) in Glendale. Slim but it’s still a chance for the Seahawks to get NFC’s No.1 seed. The Seahawks have to beat the 49ers and the Green Bay Packers would have to lose to the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints would have to lose or tie their game against the Carolina Panthers.

The Seahawks will play Sunday’s game looking to make it four games in a row and walk away with no injuries. Here is how the Seahawks and 49ers match on Sunday using the numbers.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Despite their record, the 49ers have the 5th ranked defense in the league. The Niners defense is led by linebacker Fred Warner the reigning NFC defensive player of the Week. Warner recorded a career high tying 14 tackles in the 49ers 20-12 win over the Arizona Cardinals last week.

Joining Warner in the middle of the 49er’s defense are Dre Greenlaw and Al-Shaair Azeez forming a linebacking corps that is as good as any in the league. The 49ers defense is ranked no.4 against the and no.6 against the run. The Seahawks offense is ranked 13th overall, no. 11 in rushing, and No.14 in the passing game. In their week eight 37-27 win over the 49ers, the Seahawks relied on Russell Wilson’s arm. Wilson was in cook mode passing for  261 yds 4 TD and a 128.3 rating.

RUSH ATTACK

Rookie DeeJay Dallas started at running back the last time the teams met. This time around Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde, and Rashaad Penny all healthy and in rhythm. The Seahawks will look to establish the run and use Wilson’s arm sparingly. Look for Carson to get about 15-20 carries and Rashaad Penny getting a season-high carries. Hyde has been battling the flu all week and could be rested.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

In the Week eight match up the Seahawks defense sacked quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo three times and he was injured for the rest of the season. C.J Beathard will be starting his second straight game. Last week against the Cardinals Beathard was simply red hot. Beathard was 13 of 22 for 182 yards and three touchdowns with a passer rating of 125. Running back Jeffrey Wilson rambled for 183 yards on 13 carries against the Cardinals. Tight End George Kittle is back in the 49ers offense and had four receptions for 92 yards.

PASSING ATTACK

The 49ers offense will try to attack the Seahawks 32nd ranked pass defense. The Seahawks run defense is ranked 5th in the defense so the 49ers will run some stretch plays but they will be symbolic. The Niners gave up three sacks against the Cardinals so look for  Ken Norton Jr. to bring disguised blitzes against the young Beathard who has a mere 11 NFL starts in his career

GAME NOTES

Russell Wilson needs two touchdowns to pass Dan Marino for second-place for the most passing touchdowns in a player’s first nine seasons in NFL history with 267.

Tyler Lockett needs seven receptions to set the franchise-record with 95 in a single-season

DK Metcalf needs six yards to break Steve Largent’s 1985 record for most yards in a single-season in franchise history with 1,288.
Metcalf needs 18 yards to become the first player in franchise history to post a 1,300-yard season.

BIG TAKE AWAY

Look for a relatively easy 24 to10 Seahawks win over a 49ers team that will run out steam. The Seahawks run game will overpower the Niner’s defense. The Seahawks defense will get to Beathard and make it a long day for the third-year pro. Look for the Seahawks to rest starts in the fourth quarter with an eye on next Sunday’s playoff game.
