Going into Sunday’s game with the Arizona Cardinals the Seahawks were 59-0 when leading by 10 points or more at halftime. The Seahawks looked to be on their way to extending that record to 60-0 when they went into the halftime break with a 27-17 lead. The Seahawks were outscored 20 to 7 by the Cardinals and saw their halftime lead and season record snapped.
The Seahawks have made habit of producing miraculous victories. On Sunday the Hawks simply ran out of magic due to poor execution down the stretch.
TYLER LOCKETT HAS A CAREER DAY
The glue in the wide receivers room had his way with the Cardinals secondary and turned in a career performance with 15 reception for 200 yards and three touchdowns. The 15 receptions tied the team record held by Steve Largent. The 200 receiving yards were a career-best for Lockett. The three touchdowns were simply spectacular and showed why he is the team’s most consistent receiver.
WILSON MADE THREE MISTAKES
The Seahawk’s inability to move the ball in the second half was caused by the Cardinals changing their defensive philosophy. In the first half, the Cardinals dropped back in zone pass coverage making sure to keep the Seahawks receivers and Russell Wilson in front of them.
In the second the Cardinal unleashed their blitz package and went after Wilson. The pressure forced Wilson into two second-half interceptions.
While Wilson gets the blame because of the nature of the quarterback position the mistakes were team breakdowns. With no time to read the defense due to poor pass blocking and blitz pickup Wilson was hurried and hit numerous times in the second half. Despite the three interceptions, Wilson was able to put up some incredible numbers, 33/50 for 388 yards and three touchdowns to go with the interceptions. Wilson was the games leading rusher with 84 yards on 6 carries.
KYLER MURRAY IS AS GOOD AS ADVERTISED
The Seahawk’s inability to get off the field on defense contributed to the loss. Like Wilson, Murray had some gaudy numbers 34/48 for 360 passing yards, three touchdowns, and one interception for a QB rating of 104.5. Murray finished the game with 67 rushing yards on 14 carries and one touchdown. The second-year quarterback ability to extend the play with his feet was a backbreaker for the Seahawks defense all night.
BIG TAKE AWAY
It was very unlikely that the Seahawks were going to win all of their games. The lone undefeated team in the NFL is now the Pittsburg Steelers at 6-0. One loss does not a season make. The Seahawks took the blame for the loss due to their poor execution down the stretch. The lesson is there for the team to learn and will be learned. The loss was humbling and will serve as a reminder to the team that the championship team gets better as the season progresses. Defensive captain Bobby Wagner said it best when he said it’s time for the defense to perform.
