The Seahawks send in their League mandated 53-man roster Saturday afternoon with a few eyebrow moves. With such a unique preseason the moves the teams make after the deadline speaks volumes about what the coaches see as their future.
SURPRISE MOVES
The Seahawks two spurries moves on Saturday was the release of Paul Richardson and Shaquem Griffin. Richardson was the team’s first round pick in 2014 looked to be a lock to make the team after being bought back last week. Unfortunately for Richardson injuries hampered his participation in practice. On Saturday the Jadeveon Clowney watch finally ended with the former Seahawk DE signed with the Tennessee Titans.
For Griffin it became a numbers game. The third year player was fighting to be Bruce Irvin’s backup at Strong Side Linebacker. Cody Barton’s versatility also played a part in the decision. Barton started four games last year SLB and promising rookies Jordyn Brooks has the talent to play SLB. The Seahawks are currently working on bringing Griffin back as a practice team player.

VALUE OF PRACTICE PLAYERS
Practice squad spots are especially valuable this year. Teams can call up two players off the squad each Saturday (or the day before the game) to their active gameday roster. Those players will receive pro-rated shares of active roster player salaries for that game.
Those players can then go back to the PS without having to go through waivers. Teams can do that twice a season with each player.
Teams can also protect four players each week on their practice squad from being signed to another team’s 53-man roster. Teams can protect each player for times a year.
