” We Wanted Depth and Competition, ” Brian Schottenheimer on Seahawks O Line changes

Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer met with local media for the first time this summer. Schottenheimer is entering his third year with the Seahawks as the OC and feels confident about the team improving from last year’s ranking of 8th in the league.  The Seahawks were ranked 4th in rushing and 14th in passing.  The fact that the Seahawks lost both Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny down the stretch and still managed to finish 4th best in rushing was quite an accomplishment.

Chris Carson is fully healthy although his participation in this training camp has been hampered by family issues. Penny is attending practice but not participating as he continues to recover from knee surgery. The Seahawks signed free agent running back Carlos Hyde for depth and drafted Dee Jay Dallas in the fifth round of this year’s draft. Schottenheimer spoke highly of the rookie and his work ethic during practice so far.

One unit that saw a major reshuffle was the Seahawks offensive line. Guard D.J Fluker, Center Justin Britt, and Right Tackle Germain Ifedi are all gone meaning the team will have three new starters. Newcomers  B.J Finney C/G,  Tackles Cedric  Ogbuehi, Brandon Shell and third-round pick Damien Lewis were brought in to battle for the three spots.

Already on the Seahawks  O-Line depth chart were  Tackles Chad Wheeler, Jamarco Jones, guards  Jordan Simmons, and Phil Haynes. Hybrids  Ethan Pocic,  and Kyle Fuller are competing for Center and Guard spots. The only sure bet regarding the Seahawks offensive line is Tackle Duane Brown and  Guard Mike Lupati according to Schottenheimer.

Like every other team in professional sports the Seahawks are high on using analytics to predict  trends and tendencies.

During the offseason, the Seahawks signed free agent tight end Greg Olson. The former All-Pro Bowler with the Panther is entering his 14th year in the league. Schottenheimer has been in pressed with Olsen’s work ethic and football intellect.

The Seahawks will hold their second mock game at CenturyLink Field  Wednesday afternoon. With less than three weeks before the season starts each practice game and practice is becoming important for the players to showcase their talent.
