While the Washington Huskies Basketball team continues to struggle in the win column having lost five games in a row, such is not the case when ti comes to recognition for Freshmen Isaiah Stewart. On Friday Steward was selected as one of the top 10 finalists for the 2020 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in October, which has now been narrowed to just 10.
Stewart is one of three freshmen on the list and one of two from the Pac-12 Conference. He is the leading freshman scorer in the Pac-12 and is the third leading freshman scorer in the NCAA.
The 6-9 center in his first year with the Huskies is leading the team in scoring at 17.7 points per game while also pulling down a team-high 8.8 rebounds. He is one of two freshmen nationally to average 17 points and 8 rebounds per game. In 23 games, Stewart has posted five 20-point/10-rebound double-doubles and has a league-best nine double-doubles.
He is the only player on the list to have a game with 25 points, 10 or more rebounds and five blocks which he did against Oregon when he went for 25/19/5. Additionally, Stewart is shooting 57 percent from the field and 74.7 percent from the free throw line. His 2.1 blocks per game rank third in the league as well.
The top 10 will be narrowed down to five finalists in mid-March.
