The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame named Univerity of Washington Sophomore guard Jaylen Nowell as one of 10 finalists for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award Tuesday morning.
Nowell, the lone Pac-12 representative leads the Huskies ((18-4,) who are undefeated in conference play ( 11-0 ) in scoring with 16.6 points per game which is good enough for sixth play in the conference. Nowell has seen a significant improvement in his play from last year. He’s leading the team in assists at 75 (3.4pg) and his 51.9 field goal shooting percentage is second in the Pac-12 Conference. Nowell is shooting 45.1 percent from 3-point range which is second best in the conference while also pulling down 5.4 rebounds per game, which ranks second on the Huskies squad.
Out of the 10 finalists, Nowell is one of two that is averaging over 50 percent shooting, 16 or more points along with at least 3.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game, joining Jarrett Culver from Texas Tech. Nowell has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week three times becoming the first Husky since Isaiah Thomas to earn the award three times in one season.
In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The winner of the 2019 Jerry West Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 12, 2019, along with the other four members of the Naismith Starting 5.
