The Seattle Seahawks stayed true to their history by trading down their first-round pick with the Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks moved down from 18th place to 27th place and added a third and sixth round pick. In addition to the Seahawks first round pick the Packers acquired the Seahawks seventh-round pick.
The Packers picked cornerback Jaire Alexander from Louisville.
After much speculation on whether they would trade down or not with the 27th pick the Seahawks held firm and selected San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny
Penny had 2,248 rushing yards and scored 23 rushing touchdowns his senior year at San Diego State and finished his four-year career with the Aztecs with 3,656 rushing yards, averaged 7.5 yards a carry and scored 38 rushing touchdowns.
“You know what, I didn’t. I’m just excited about being a part of this process and this draft. To be honest, it didn’t really matter where I went, I just knew that I was going to come in and work hard and compete. That’s something about me, I’m just a hard worker. I’m just excited to be in this situation right now. This is definitely unexpected, but I just knew one day I was going to get a call.”
Rashad was asked what he can bring to the Seahawks as a first-round pick.

Rashad’s brother Elijhaa Penny plays for the Arizona Cardinals and the newest Seahawks was asked what it was like to have two brothers from the same family in the NFL.
“It’s a blessing to our family. It just shows you where we came from. We come from a hard-working family and that’s just how we are. We’re a hard-working,blue-collar family. My oldest brother Elijhaa made it into the NFL as an undrafted free agent and for him to go through that process and he came from the pile where he was undrafted but now he’s in his third year and I’m excited for him. It’s just a blessing because he’s been mentoring me through the whole situation. It’s just amazing.”
TAKEAWAYS
While the selection of Penny was somewhat of a surprise for people outside of the Seahawks draft room, the selection of a running back in the first round signals that the Seahawks are going back to basic and they believe they have the front line to establish a dominant running back.
Carrol and Schneider were asked if the traded down to get Penny and both men made it clear that they would have drafted Rashaad with the 18th pick and that they took a gamble by trading down. The gamble paid off in that the Seahawks got their man and picked up a couple of draft picks.
