Sounders wrap up preseason with 3-1 win over Sacramento Republic FC

The Seattle Sounders FC wrapped up their 2018 off season with a 3-1 victory over United Soccer League side the Sacramento Republic FC . A result from a lower league opponent was always expected for Brian Schmetzer and the Rave Green, a brace from Jordan Morris was simply the cherry on top.

After watching Morris endure an injury plagued 2017 season Schmetzer will no doubt look at the brace by Morris as a sign that the 2016 MLS Rookie of the year is injury free and ready for a breakout year.

Morris gave the Sounders an early lead when he knocked home a  miss clearance by an SRFC defender from close range in the second minute of the game. Trey Wingo gave the Sounders a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute when he volleyed a Nicola Lodeiro pass into the back of the Republic net.

Sacramento pulled one back early in the second half on a close-range shot from Christian Eissele, but Morris made it 3-1 in the 79th minute to complete his brace. The Stanford product played a give-and-go with Seyi Adekoya to set up a first-time blast into the top corner, giving the SRFC goalkeeper no chance at a save.

Prior to this evening’s match at Sacramento Republic FC, the Rave Green faced Reno 1868 FC in a closed-door scrimmage Thursday morning at UC Davis’ Aggie Soccer Field. With Schmetzer fielding a split-squad of first team and developmental players, Sounders FC fell 1-0 for its second loss of the 2018 preseason presented by Adidas.
With preseason action now completed, Sounders FC gears up for its Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League matchup with Salvadoran side Santa Tecla FC. The Rave Green travel to El Salvador for the first leg next Thursday, February 22 before hosting the second leg on March 1 on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC’s 10th MLS campaign begins at home on Sunday, March 4 against expansion side Los Angeles FC.
