Its not that the no. 7 ranked University of Washington Huskies (4-0, 1-0) were in a hurry in their Pac-12 conference opener at Colorado (3-1, 1-1). It was the opposite, the visitors drew a line in the trenches and dared the home side to cross it. The Huskies were bent on being rude guests.
The Huskies ability to dominate the trenches on both sides of the ball enabled running back Myles Gaskin to rush for a career high 202 yards, score two touchdowns on 27 carriers. The offensive line dominance allowed Husky quarterback Jake Browing to have an efficient day at the office. Browing was 11-21- 160 yards one touchdown and one interception and no sacks. With the offensive line dominating Browning was cool and comfortable in the pocket.
The defensive lines dominance bottled the Buffs after the home side scored on its first possession of the game after the Browning interception. After the Buffs went up 7-0 the Ap Preseason All- American Second team All- American nominee Defensive lineman Vita Vea busted through the Buffalo’s punt team protection line blocked the punt and fellow lineman Levi Onwuzurike recoverd the ball on the 12 yard line.
The play changed the game and was the catalyst to the Huskies gaining much-needed momentum Husky coach Chris Petersen pointed out after the game.
“I’m really proud of those guys for that one. That’s like a PAT field goal and we try to take pride in never taking a down off. That was a safe punt. We challenge our D-line. We’re all looking back there at Dante [Pettis] to see where he’s lined up and going to field the ball. It was game-changing. It was awesome.”
Four plays later Gaskin scored the first of his two touchdowns and the Huskies never looked back.
