What separates a professional athlete from an athlete that has the same physical attributes is the mental fortitude to overcome adversity one play at a time. The Seattle Seahawks ( 6-3) showed that they have the heart of a champion in their 22 to 16 win over the Arizona Cardinals (4-5).
The Seahawks started the game without All-Pro Safety Earl Thomas and finished the game without All-Pro Cornerback Richard Sherman due to an Achilles injury.
” He is one of the most iconic players well miss the heck out of him,” Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said after the game. ” We know that he will be with us every step of the way.”
Sherman wasn’t the only Seahawks suffer an injury, left tackle Duane Brown( ankle), running back C.J. Prosise (ankle), DT Jaren Reed (hamstring), linebacker Michael Wilhoite ( calf) and safety Kam Chancellor ( stinger) all suffered injuries. The extent of the injuries will be known in the next few days as players undergo medical tests.
Despite the heartbreaking injuries the Seahawks stayed focused on the business at hand and execute when it mattered most.
Russell Wilson hit Jimmy Graham with a six-yard pass on the first of two touchdown plays between the pair to give the Seahawks the 7-0 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter. Arizona answered with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Drew Stanton to Jermaine Gresham to tie the game at seven all. Kam Chancellor tackled Adrian Peterson in the end zone for a Seahawks safety and Blair Walsh showed he had overcome last weeks kicking transgressions by booted two field goal from 33 and 43 yards to give the Seahawks the 15 to 7 halftime lead.
Phil Dawson booted a 43-yard field to narrow the Seahawks lead to just five points at 15-10 midway thru the third quarter. Wilson and Graham connected for their second touchdown combo of the day from two yards out on the Seahawks next possession to put the game out of reach and give Seattle players an emotional victory that left them heavy hearted.
