The Seahawks set sights on Saints despite worrisome injury report

SEAHAWSKS BANGED UP AFTER STEELERS WIN

The Seahawks returned to practice on Wednesday, banged up from their 31-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. In a physical game, the Seahawks were able to establish a consistent running game, which saw Ken Walker rush for 109 yards and score a touchdown on 13 carries.   Dominant play by the interior defensive line saw the Seahawks record three sacks and generate eight quarterback hits on the Steelers ‘ quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Head coach Mike Macdonald is hoping the team will now adopt the physical style of play, something he hopes will become a Seahawks trademark.

“I think it is just important to play that way. Games can go all sort of different directions. Turnover differential is very important. How physical you play does factor into that. How you affect the quarterback is going to be a big indicator. Situational football. It’s a driving force behind how we want to play and the formula of how we want to win games. It’s important to us to play that way.”

THE WIN CAME AT A COST

During Monday’s press conference, Macdonald provided an ominous injury report, which essentially suggested that the team was dealing with a rash of injuries following the Steelers’ win. During Wednesday’s press conference, Macdonald sang a more conciliatory tune.

“The sky is not falling. What I’ve learned is you can’t trust me with the injuries. I don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m not the expert here, ‘ Said Macdonald .”I try to give you the best I can, but within the rules, but I really don’t want to give you too much. Sometimes I’m wrong, it all comes from a good place, I promise. But, yeah, we got a couple guys working through some things but nothing crazy.”

SEVERAL PLAYERS MISS PRACTICE

After the Wednesday injury report, it became obvious who Macdonald was referring to .In addition, Devon Witherspoon, Nick Emmanwori, Julian Love, and Zach Charbonnet did not participate in Wednesday’s practice.  MacDonald has instilled a culture of “next man up,” and it has worked.

“We talk about the 70 (roster), that’s a critical part of our team, and I think is going to be something that we’re going to be leaning on to have success over the course of year, whether it’s our DBs or whatever position. There’s going to be times where positions are low on guys, and we’re going to be dependent on those guys to step up and go play. They did that last week, and that’s great, but every week we’re going to be dealing with that sort of thing, that’s the nature of our business.”

The loss of Witherspoon for the second straight week would be worrisome, given his talent and impact on the Seahawks’ defense. The same could be said for Love, who is the cornerstone of the backline. Charbonnet’s absence would be a blow to the Seahawks’ dynamic duo running attack, but it would open an opportunity for  George Holani.

THE SAINTS HAVE A GOOD RUN DEFENSE

The Seahawks will need to establish a ground game against the Saints, whose pas defense is ranked 13th, while their run defense is ranked 17th.
