Sounders bounced out of the Lamar Hunt Trophy competition by San Jose in a dramatic  (10-9) penalty shootout.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Wednesday’s match was Seattle’s first contest in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup since 2019, with the last two editions of the national tournament being paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Sounders FC is now 23-6-5 all-time in U.S. Open Cup play, including a 19-2-2 mark at home.
  • With his match-tying goal in the 77th minute, Fredy Montero took sole possession of Seattle’s all-time scoring mark in Open Cup play (eight goals). Montero was previously tied with former Sounders FC forward Nate Jaqua for the lead.
  • Montero added to his all-time goal-scoring lead in Rave Green, with the veteran striker now owning 73 goals across all competitions in his two runs with the club (2009-2012, 2021-present).
  • With his free kick strike in the 54th minute, Jimmy Medranda scored his fifth goal for Sounders FC across all competitions. The Colombian wingback joined the Rave Green in a trade with Nashville in October of 2020.
  • Tonight’s match marked the fourth all-time meeting between Seattle and San Jose in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, with Sounders FC holding a 1-1-2 record in those matchups. Prior to tonight, the two sides last met in the Open Cup in 2017, a 2-1 win for the Earthquakes.
  • Sounders FC has now dropped back-to-back matches against the Quakes this season, with Seattle losing in San Jose 4-3 on April 23 in MLS play.
  • A mainstay with Tacoma Defiance, rookie Dylan Teves made his Sounders FC debut this evening, entering the match in the 70th minute as a substitute for Ethan Dobbelaere.
  • Head Coach Brian Schmetzer deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation with two changes from Saturday’s match at Dallas: Kelyn Rowe and Josh Atencio replacing Nouhou and Obed Vargas.
