Rapid Takes From Seahawks 23-20 OT Loss To Steelers

Placekicker Chris Boswell’s 37-yard field in overtime delivered an emotional 23-20 win for the Pittsburg Steelers over the Seattle Seahawks who were left with despair and heartbreak.  After a lackluster first half, the Seahawks dominated the third quarter, kept up with the  Steelers in the fourth quarter, and did everything but score in the extra period. The end result was a disappointing hard-fought loss.

The first sobering take from Seahawk’s gutsy but heartbreaking loss to the Pittsburg  Steelers is that football is a violent game that can alter a player’s life in a single play. That reminder came late in Sunday’s game when Darrell Taylor was transported off the field in a cart with his helmet on to a local Pittsburg Hospital for further tests. A precautionary measure that is taken for players who suffer neck injuries. Head coach Pete Carroll gave a preliminary good news update in his post-game conference.

SEAHAWKS HAVE FOUND THE BALANCE BETWEEN THE RUN AND THE PASS

After netting just 65 total offensive yards in the first half the Seahawks started the third quarter with a 14-0 deficit. Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron mixed up the play calling to freeze the Steelers pass rush to start the second half. The Seahawks received the second-half half kick and scored on a 10 play 75-yard drive that saw Geno Smith throw just one pass.

In the Seahawk’s second possession of the third quarter, Waldron flipped the script and used a passing game that solely relied on the tight ends. Gerald Everett’s 41-yard pass reception set up Will Dissly’s one-yard touchdown that brought the Seahawks within three at 17-14. How effective was the playing calling? The hawks gained 110  yards of offense in the third quarter. An even split 65 on the ground and 65 in the air.  The Seahawks finished the game with 309 offensive yards, 165 passing, and 144 running. The question is will Waldron stick to this formula moving forward?

GENO SMITH CAN HELP THE TEAM WIN

Geno Wilson has ended the last two games with turnovers. Against the Rams it was an interception and  Sunday night it was a fumble that was recovered by the Steelers who converted the miscue to a game-winning field goal.

Give credit to Smith for getting the Seahawks in a position to win. Despite facing relentless pressure all night Smith was in full command of the offense was clear on the team’s objective. A good quarterback keeps a level head during the ups and downs of a game. Smith weathered the team’s disastrous first half, led the team to a dominating second half, and nearly pulled off a miraculous win. The fumble was a result of the ball being knocked out. With more reps, Smith will know to look for oncoming defenders when tucking the ball in and heading up the field.

ROOKIE TRE BROWN COULD BE THE ANSWER AT CORNERBACK

After an injury-filled training camp Rookie, Tre Brown showed that he may be the answer to the Seahawks cornerback carousal. Brown started the season on injured reserve because of a knee injury. On Friday Brown was placed on the active roster . The rookie wasted no time taking advantage of his opportunity against the Steelers.    Brown recorded three solo tackles and stopped  Steelers wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud just short of the first down marker on third down in overtime.
